How to choose water-based paint dispersant?

Coating dispersant refers to additives that can improve the dispersion performance of solid-liquid materials. When grinding, a dispersant is added to help pulverize the particles, prevent the broken particles from agglomerating, and maintain dispersion. Under high-shear agitation, the water-insoluble oily liquid is dispersed into very small droplets, which can be quickly stratified by stopping the stirring. The interfacial tension makes the stratification fast. Adding dispersant and stirring can form a stable emulsion.

Additives are a relatively small part of coatings, and they are also important components that cannot be ignored. Most water-based coatings exist in water-based coatings in polymerized or polymerized form. If they are not dispersed into smaller, basic particles to form a stable dispersion system, defects such as coarsening, flocculation, precipitation, color and tinting power will occur. The dispersant must be dissolved in the paint and adsorbed on the interface between the powder and water. Unlike general architectural coatings, the dispersion of slurry after coating involves not only raw material formulation, raw material selection, dispersant, etc. Therefore, pigment dispersant is an important production link in the production process of coatings. It is directly related to the storage, construction, appearance, and film performance of the coating. Therefore, choosing the right dispersant is a very important production link. The main dispersants are anionic, cationic, non-ionic, and amphoteric polymerization types.

The dispersant is mainly realized by wetting, grinding, dispersing, coupling and wrapping. For water-based coatings, expensive dispersants cannot be used due to cost control issues. Currently, anionic and non-ionic wetting agents are mainly used in the market. This method uses high-shear disperser, grinding and other methods to make the pigment particles form a semi-flocculated state, or controllable flocculation, under low surface tension. Assuming that the viscosity of the paint is relatively high during this period, the pigment will not have the phenomenon of reverse coarsening and serious flocculation. It has good comprehensive performance, can be dispersed, and the dosage is small, which can improve the bonding performance of the paint. However, its disadvantage is that it has no deflocculating base and is not suitable for coatings that require high color development. Based on this, a deflocculating water-based paint dispersant was developed. Its advantages are: good color development of pigments and fillers, high gloss and good gloss.
